restoration

Whether we are progressively restoring a working quarry or maintaining a site that we’ve already restored, where there is an interest we always work in partnership with local communities, wildlife groups and other bodies to ensure that environments are created which are appropriate to local needs.

Adopting a partnership approach to land management, biodiversity initiatives are not just an afterthought once sites have been restored. At the very earliest stages of planning for a new quarry or quarry extension, options are examined and assessed. We don’t simply meet statutory requirements when restoring our sites – we go way beyond these guidelines and take up the challenge of developing first-class nature habitats wherever and whenever we can.

In 2003 we took our first public steps towards producing a national Biodiversity Action Plan, outlining an overall strategy for wildlife management and maximising the conservation impact of restoration projects at our sites throughout the UK. We have since made significant progress in the formation of local biodiversity teams, usually comprising a broad range of stakeholders who work alongside Sibelco UK in assessing and acting upon a wide range of issues including UK and county-level biodiversity targets.
