Gymnasts bound for USA with a little help from quarry company
May 2008
Seven Cheshire gymnasts are this month heading for Atlanta as part of the National Disabilities Gymnastic Display Team with support from quarry operator, Sibelco UK. The company responded to a request for financial assistance to help members of the Saxon Gym Club to compete in the international competition which will also incorporate a visit to Tennessee.
Sandbach-based Jenny Meakin, treasurer of the National Disabilities Gymnastic Display Team said: “The trip to America will be a fabulous experience for the children but the cost of travelling to these type of events increases every year. Our club is completely self-funded and so the money provided by Sibelco has made a big difference in helping to pay for things like insurance and entry fees.”
In the past Sibelco has provided leotards for the club and was happy to help out with the trip to Atlanta. Amanda Roberts, Sibelco’s community relations officer commented: “Saxon Gym Club provides great sporting opportunities for local children and I’m sure the competition in America will be beneficial for all involved.”
The gymnasts will be joined by Sibelco’s company mascot, Cuthbert the Camel, for whom the children have even made a club leotard.
