Sibelco UK is leading the quarrying industry in terms of energy efficiency and carbon management.

In 2003 we launched a campaign focusing on all of our UK operations with the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 17,000 tonnes by 2010. To date we have succeeded in cutting emissions by more than 25,000 tonnes, dramatically reducing our environmental footprint whilst creating a more competitive business in an increasingly challenging international marketplace. In doing so we became the first company in the quarrying sector to receive Energy Efficiency Accreditation from the National Energy Foundation. More recently we became one of the first companies in the UK to receive the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard, a government-supported initiative which recognises businesses that have genuinely reduced their carbon footprint and are committed to making further reductions year on year.

And now we are taking the project to another level. In conjunction with the Carbon Trust, we are investing in a new Carbon Management Programme through which to accurately assess and manage our carbon footprint. An initial study has already evaluated the environmental impact of all aspects of our operations, from supply chain management through to transport.

For Sibelco UK, energy efficiency is no longer a ‘campaign’ - it is central to our organisational culture and future business model.
